Halfway to the next way

It is hard to say precisely, but based on some rough measurements, we will cross the halfway mark sometime today. And that feels odd.

Yesterday was an interesting lesson in running the middle.

We picked a route that was about as south as possible, keeping the wind at our backs. It was downwind sailing.

But halfway through the day, we realized what we were experiencing was nothing like the forecast told us.

We had much higher guests and a much larger swell. Making the experience not great. Surfing a catamaran at 18k down a 3M swell sounds excellent sitting at your desk - but not such a great feeling in practice.

Yesterday reminded me of the concept of the forecast. A forecast is just that—a forecast. It is not fact; it is not reality. And often, you do not control the delta between the forecast and reality. But as we learned yesterday, you need to be prepared to accommodate it. When you are in the city, and the forecast is wrong, it is inconvenient but manageable. But that is not always the case.

Also, running in the middle often seems safe, but there is a problem. When your strategy is to be in the middle, you are exposed to shifts from either side, and something shifts from both sides.

The middle is an awful place to be. Instead of trying to balance the in-between, pick a path and own it.

We are also crushing timezones like there is no tomorrow! As we make our way back toward the west, we add hours but lose daytime as we move north. Adding hours and losing hours all at once is an odd sensation.

The weather has been overcast for days, but it is officially hot! Like legit hot! It is rainy and sticky… as we approach the ITCZ (topic for tomorrow!)

No fish. No radar.
