Napoleon Marks the Spot

Last night, at about 3 a.m., we rounded the corner to St Helena. The last 20 kn seemed to take forever. Often, the expression X marks the spot is used, but if you see below, we have fashioned more of a star formation to mark the spot.

The flying fish I have highlighted over the last few posts are legit. They skim over the water in groups of up to 20. They fly maybe 1 meter above the water for hundreds of meters - in an uncontrollable, crazy way. Steering is not a strength, as all these fish and a few more crashed into the boat simultaneously. It was like we were being attacked in the middle of the night.

As my brother said, I am sure they were pissed. What are the odds in this vast ocean they will run into us…

St Helena, which feels like the world’s edge, is a British Overseas Territory, which also encompasses the Ascension and Tristan da Cunha islands. It is like a rock in the middle of the ocean—I guess they call it “ a remote volcanic outpost in the South Atlantic Ocean.”

Its main claim to fame is that this is where Napoleon was exiled after the Battle of Waterloo and died here five years later. The main exports from here are lobster and fish. And you all know how I feel about fishing around here!
